Aloeswood(agarwood). in Korea

There are several reasons why ALOESWOOD has never been really well-known in Korea. First, the supply was very limited due to the fact that it was imported through Japan and China, who purchased ALOESWOOD from southeast Asia. And secondly, it was exclusively owned and utilized by kings. Even the highest level officers and members of the elite did not have access to ALOESWOOD unless there was special permission granted by the kings.

Historical anecdotes:

(1) Samguk Sagi (History of Three Kingdoms)

Silla King Hyun-Duk (919 AD)

The king, Silla King Hyun-Duk (919 AD) declared ALOESWOOD to be a very precious imported product, thereby banning all people, including high level autocrats, from using ALOESWOOD

(2) Koryo Sa (History of Koryo Dynasty)

·         Medicine and Diplomatic Present: Koryo King Mun-Jong used ALOESWOOD for medicinal purposes. He was suffering from rheumatism, due to his old age, and he had tried all other possible treatments from the best doctors in Koryo. However, his illness steadily worsened due to ineffective medication. As a last resort, he asked the emperor of Song in China for One-hundred different kinds of medicinal materials. Song emperor responded by sending his personal doctor, the different kinds of medicinal matierals, along with eighty-eight diplomatic delegates. On the list of medicines, ALOESWOOD was listed as the first item on the list for its potency. (Book 9)

He said, ¡§Dryobalanops aromatica Gaertn and Cinnabar are very precious medicinal materials but those two items are still available in China, but ALOESWOOD is so precious that it¡¦s hard to find even in China. In the past, Japanese merchants often came to our courtries to sell ALOESWOOD They stopped selling ALOESWOOD to us because we paid them so little. ALOESWOOD does not originate in Japan so Japanese merchants have to pruchase it from a very distant place. Therefore, we should buy ALOESWOOD regardless of the price. (Sejong 14, Book 3, pp.421)¡¨

·         King's favorite item: (1493 AD) Many officers thought that Japanese merchants gained too much excess profits from trading with Korea. Therefore, officers asked the king to ban all the trade with Japanese merchants. King Seung-Jong replied: Except ALOESWOOD and Dryobalanops aromatica Gaerin, ban all trade with Japanese merchants. For these two items, you have to buy them regardless of the price. (Seung-Jong 25, Book 12, pp. 546)

·         King's worship item: (1804 AD) In Insan palace, one was to offer sacrifices to the spirits five different items. Only when the King himself offered the worship, ALOESWOOD was used. Otherwise, other fragrant materials were sued in stead. (Soon-Jo 5, Book 47, pp. 505)

·         Crown prince's (Heir to the throne) Bead: (1541 AD) Joong-jong¡¦ crown prince lost a set of bead made by ALOESWOOD The lost of the bead did not worry him for he knew that the stolen bead will eventually be sold back to palace and return to his hand due to its priceless value. Later, the lost ALOESWOOD beads indeed returned to the crown prince. (Joong-Jong 36, Book 18, pp.442)

Aloeswood(agarwood). in Bible

There are total of five places in Bible where the ALOESWOOD appears. Instead of being called its most used common name- agarwood, another common name of agarwood, aloe, had been used. Aloewood was specifically mentioned by God as "his plant" in Bible (Numbers 24:6). Aloewood was used by Egyptians for embalming dead bodies. Nicodemus brought it (pounded aloewood) to embalm the body of Christ (John 19:39); aloewood also used as precious perfume in other parts of Bible. According the Easton's Bible dictionary, aloewood in the bible is Aquilaria agallochum that is ALOESWOOD

John 19:39
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

Numbers 24:6
As he valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees besides the waters.

Proverbs 7:17
I have perfumed by bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

Psalms 45:8

Solomon 4:14
Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:

Characteristics of A.A.R.(Agarwood)

Aquilaria agallocha Roxb. (A.A.R.) or agarwood is regarded as a pharmacological product formed as the result of a fungus disease caused by wounds or borings on the trunk. A.A.R. consists of irregular patches of dark wood highly charged with oleoresin, which is found in the interior of old trees. A.A.R. can be found in A.A.R trees aged from decades to hundreds of years. The A.A.R. tree belongs to Thymelaeaceae family. A.A.R. tree can grow up to 120 feet and live up to a thousand years. The disease takes more than 500 ~ 700 hundred years to form the highest concentration of oleoresin.

A.A.R. is found on the market in the form of chips, splinters and blocks. The most common sizes range from 7 to 30 cm long and 1.5 to 10 cm wide. However, some A.A.R. are longer than one meter. A.A.R. tastes slightly bitter, acrid, and fills with warm aromatic. It burns with bright flames and black smolders giving off a pleasant odor.

Unlike other kind of fragrant wood or material, A.A.R. does not generate obvious fragrance before burning. It only generates great fragrance when it is burned. The fragrance is effected by various factors such as level of containing oleoresin, reason of forming oleoresin and the color of resin.

A.A.R. oleoresin has five colors- green, dark green, golden (light yellow), yellow, and black. Green is regarded as the highest grade and black's grade is the lowest. Different color A.A.R. has different fragrance when it is burned.

The most important criterion to judge the grade of A.A.R. is its buoyancy. Chen-Xiang is the Chinese name of A.A.R. "Chen" means "sinking". The density of A.A.R. tree without oleoresin is a mere 0.4. However, when the percentage of containing oleoresin is over 25%, A.A.R. in any forms (chips, powders, or larger pieces) will sink into water. The Chinese name of A.A.R. is originated from this characteristic.

Because it takes so long to form a high quality A.A.R., the demand for A.A.R. is significantly greater than its supply. Although scientists and merchants in India and Indonesia had tried to cultivate A.A.R. with oleoresin in A.A.R. tree, it resulted in getting A.A.R. that contains very less oleoresin. In reality, it is almost impossible to find real A.A.R. in the market nowadays. Most A.A.R. sold in the market either is adulterated or can not be used as medicine because of its low content of oleoresin.

Introduction

(1) History of Aloeswood

The history of Aloeswood, also known as argarwood, and A.A.R, has been regarded for centuries by the Asian , Egyptian, and Near-East civilizations as a rare and precious commodity. A.A.R is a kind of incense material that originated from Southeast Asia and India. ALOESWOOD has always been highly prized in all of the major ancient civilizations.

Due to the fact that there are many products out on the market claiming the same benefits, there needs to be a distinction made between agarwood and Aloeswood. (A.A.R). ALOESWOOD is the one and only original agarwood from the very beginning of time. Due to A.A.R's limited availability, several different strains agarwood have been developed throughout history. There are many products out there claiming the potency as the original, but they are poor substitutes for the real thing!! Throughout the web site, the name, ALOESWOOD, which is the acronym for Aloeswood., is used in order to distinguish it from its substitutes and counterfeits.

Throughout the history, only the Kings and the very wealthy were able to benefit from its powers and now it can be available to the general public. ALOESWOOD was such a precious commodity that it was used as a gift among nations for their diplomatic purposes, while it reflected on ones' wealth and power. For more information about the historical records and stories regarding to ALOESWOOD, please refer for Stories Page.

(2) Uses
There are several different uses for ALOESWOOD:

  1. Medicine: ALOESWOOD can be used as an anti-biotic. Very few natural and organic plants have the same kind of medicinal potency as ALOESWOOD It is one of the earliest recorded medicines found in early Chinese medical textbooks. The main function of ALOESWOOD is to remove the bad chi or energy from the body, which promotes circulation and blood flow. The effectiveness of ALOESWOOD is mainly decided by the "content of ALOESWOOD oleoresin"(or percentage of resin in ALOESWOOD chips or pieces used). For more detail about the medical potency of ALOESWOOD, please refer to Functions Page.
  2. Fragrance: ALOESWOOD almost has no fragrance before burning. However, the beautiful fragrance generated while burning makes the most beneficial fragrances available. In addition, according to Chinese medical books, its fragrance can get rid of bad chi just as well when inhaled as when one takes it internally. This feature magnifies the value of using A.A.R for fragrant purposes. - The fragrance of ALOESWOOD can be enjoyed by: a. Directly burning the chips or pieces: The fragrance generated by this method has the best fragrance. However, it's very expensive to enjoy in this way since ALOESWOOD is extremely flammable. From the past, very limited number of people can afford to do in this way. b. Adding into Incense: Slow-burning incense with ALOESWOOD additive makes it an economical way to utilize ALOESWOOD The cost of the incense sticks varies on the actual quantity of ALOESWOOD used in the production of the incense. c. ALOESWOOD oil extracted from the plant: The ALOESWOOD oil is mainly used for perfume and Aroma Therapy.
  3. Natural carving: The high value of ALOESWOOD makes it become the good choice for collection and investment. Due to the fact that it takes hundreds of years in order to form high concentration of A.A.R oleoresin, the larger pieces of ALOESWOOD with a high percentage of resin is especially precious. After cutting out the wood portion, some of ALOESWOOD possesses special artistic shape- we call it Natural Carvings. The value of ALOESWOOD natural carving is exceptional.
  4. Decoration: It has been used to decorate boxes, belts, clothing articles, and musical instruments. Of course, most of these articles were the possessions of Kings.
  5. Preservative: A.A.R is the best preservative due to its strong antibiotic functions. In addition to using it as a preservative for the highest quality perfume, ALOESWOOD was the necessary ingredient in mummification in ancient Egypt. In Bible, after Jesus died, his wealthy disciple, Nicodemus, brought ALOESWOOD (pounded aloe-wood) to embalm the body of Christ (John 19:39).
Others: People's love for ALOESWOOD is evidenced by the use of its color (dark green) in many of the formal attire of the palaces in China and Korea, and many of the buildings are also painted in the dark green color. In addition, Chen-Xiang(Chinese name of ALOESWOOD) Dance" was developed to express the public's love of ALOESWOOD

Functions and Clinical Uses

In China, Japan, and Korea, ALOESWOOD has been used for several different types of conditions, including chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, as well as swelling of the liver and spleen. ALOESWOOD can warm the stomach and kidney and cure gastralgia, gastric ulcer, gastroptosis, along with hiccups. ALOESWOOD facilitates the circulation of blood. ALOESWOOD has complete antibiotic function toward the tubercle bacillus and also has strong antibiotic function in responding to typhoid bacillus and diarrhea bacillus. ALOESWOOD has both aphrodisiac and diuretic effects. It is used in the treatment of constipation, asthma, excess phlegm, and rheumatism. In Europe and India, ALOESWOOD is often used in the treatment of tumors and cancers.
